Background Information on Kartung

KARTUNG is the last village or settlement to The Gambia’s Southern borders with cassamance or Southern Senegal.

KARTUNG is a small village situated in the Western Division Kombs South District of the Gambia. The village is located along the coastal areas of The Gambia. The coastlines of KARTUNG attains less than twenty metres (20m) high.

To cross to the other bank of the Hallahin Bolong (river), there is a canoe used for crossing requiring not more than five minutes of paddling.

The shape of the village (KARTUNG) is narrow and surrounded on three sides by Cassamance (Senegal) by a famous natural feature known as Hallahin Bolong (river). To cross to the other bank of the Hallahin Bolong (river), there is a canoe used for crossing not more than five minutes of paddling.

A quiet part of the village

KARTUNG is said to be the smallest village in Kombo South District. There are more that Four Hundred and Four compounds in KARTUNG with the population of about two thousand inhabitants. KARTUNG extends about sixty kilometres from the capital city Banjul.

Kartung is a multi ethnic, multi religious and multi cultural entity, but the most dominant religion is Islam which gave rise to the sacred site of Folonko.

Folonko was where KARTUNG began as a settlement before extending to other parts of the village (KARTUNG).
